NBA 2010-2011 Preview

I don't know as much about the NBA as I do with other sports, so some of my picks may seem a little odd. But, I'm becoming acquainted with the sport. And, I'm starting to understand what a team needs to do to win a championship in this league.

Eastern Conference
Atlantic Division

1. Boston Celtics - It's a no-brainer pick. The Big 3 shall always be called the Big 3. It's just tradition. But, as far as merit goes, the Boston Celtics essentially have four formerly big time veterans: Kevin Garnett, Shaquille O'Neal, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce. Rajon Rondo will continue to carry the load for this team, as the Celtics essentially bet their entire future on him. The Celtics also carry Jermaine O'Neal on their team, who wasn't a real presence for the Heat last season. Kendrick Perkins, the former starting center, is now on the bench. Glen Davis, Delonte West, and Nate Robinson should also produce off the bench. Luke Harongody fills the team's Irish big man requirement, previously left open by Brian Scalabrine. In college, Harongody needed the offense to cycle through him to put up his 20+ points a game and played weak defense. Doc Rivers has a job ahead of him. But, he's way down on the depth chart, which speaks of the strength of the Celtics up front. The Celtics are big, really big. They will miss Tony Allen, but Delonte West will provide energy and defense for this Celtics squad. And, his presence will certainly make Celtics - Heat games all the more interesting.

Here's the bottom line: Right now, the Celtics are my pick to win the NBA Title. They will have an easy walk through their division, unlike the Heat. And, depth wins championships. Not only that, while the Celtics have several players who could be made better by a superstar (And shall be by Rajon Rondo), they are all good in their own right. It will be Lakers - Celtics once again this season. I don't really care for ESPN's hype machine regarding the Miami Heat, but I'll get to that one later.

2. Philadelphia 76ers - If Elton Brand stays healthy, and I think it might happen this season, this team can compete for a solid playoff spot. They're better than people think. Evan Turner can play the 1, 2, or 3 spot, but he's better suited at the 2 in the NBA. He'll make an impact.

3. New York Nets - Derrick Favors has a lot of growing up to do. Pitino product Terrence Williams needs one more year to truly emerge. This team NEEDS another 20ppg scoring presence.

4. New York Knicks - Laugh out loud. Amare's stat line with the Knicks: 17pts, 6 boards, 2 assists, 4 turnovers, 58 games played.

5. Toronto Raptors - What did you expect? To be honest, I like what is going on in Toronto right now. They just really need Ricky Rubio to make this Euroteam in the making work.

Central Division
1. Chicago Bulls - This is a weak division. To be honest, almost every division in the NBA is weak right now. It's a very top-heavy league. For the Bulls, the story will be less shooting guard, more up front play. Expect the Bulls to win this "race" to the top.

2. Milwaukee Bucks - Brandon Jennings isn't a superstar. But, it isn't as if he's a slouch. They need another big time player, like most of the teams in this division. But, they should be fine.

3. Indiana Pacers - Unfortunately, they'll have a better record than their team deserves as a result of their weak division. This team needs a real superstar. Draft Danny Granger in your fantasy leagues.

4. Detroit Pistons - Yawn. Lots of guards, weak up front. They can't compete.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers - They'll be sellers at the deadline. They'll receive a lottery pick. They'll get a superstar. They'll come back in four years. This is a painful transition for Cleveland. But, they have a very loyal fanbase, myself included.

Southeast Division
1. Miami Heat - Uh, yeah. Can three men win a championship? No. Is Mario Chalmers capable of doing Rajon Rondo's job? No. Is their bench young? Yes. Does their bench have potential? Yes. Can three men win a division? Yes.

Last time I checked, the New Big Three is together for more than just this season. All trash talk aside, don't expect this team to win it this year. They could make it to the Eastern Conference Finals, but I'm willing to bet that Orlando has that spot on lockdown.

Keep an eye out for how many fouls are drawn by LeBron James this season. They number will be much smaller, as teams can no longer afford to foul him.

2. Orlando Magic - I'm absolutely sick and tired of this team. But, they're good.

3. Atlanta Hawks - Same team as last season. Miami moves up, Orlando moves down, Atlanta stagnates.

4. Washington Wizards - You have to like what this team is doing.

5. Charlotte Bobcats - They cannot make the playoffs this season. Bust.

(Now this preview becomes difficult to complete...)

Western Conference
Northwest Division
1. Oklahoma City Thunder - This team desperately needs a Center to compete with the big time teams in the West. There aren't any big time teams in Northwest Division, not anymore...

2. Denver Nuggets - ...With this possible exception. But, if I have to pick between their trio and Oklahoma City's trio, the Thunder would be my pick. And, Oklahoma City has a better bench. Denver may be a better post-season team. But, Oklahoma City will take the regular season title.

3. Portland Trial Blazers - This team really needed Greg Oden to pan out. If he stays healthy and lives up to his potential, to big ifs, this team could produce a better record. I'm not going to take that bet.

4. Utah Jazz - No Boozer = Utah fans boozing out.

5. Minnesota Timberwolves - I like their nucleus of talent. They need one more player to compete.

Southwest Division
Before I begin, I'd like to say that, aside from the Southeast Division, I like more teams in this division than in any other.

1. Dallas Mavericks - It's not as if they're going to win a championship this season, don't get me wrong. And, Dirk really needs to be on a team with a legit superstar. But, you can't bet against a team with players who just know how to win.

2. San Antonio Spurs - They won't do much in the playoffs. But, they're still a competitive team. They're old, but they play like a team.

3. Memphis Grizzlies - Playoff team. Mike Conley will do his job, OJ Mayo will put up 20ppg, as will Rudy Gay. Zach Randolph is a good #4 option in an offense. Marc Gasol will do his job, but could shift to the 4 if Hasheem Thabeet is ready to take on the 5 spot. As he probably isn't and looks like a bust, the Grizzles will not be able to grow to the point where they can win a championship. Also, who will take the last shot

4. Houston Rockets - The wear and tear of the salary cap, age, and injuries finally catches up with them. Yao Ming needs to be on a team with a legit superstar, like the Oklahoma City Thunder.

5. New Orleans Hornets - Chris Paul leaves in the offseason and joins...

Pacific Division
1. Los Angeles Lakers - The only no-brainer pick in this division. Kobe Bryant can still play the 4th quarter. They are the two-time defending NBA Champions. Their strength down low cannot be understated. They know what they're trying to do and they know how to do it. Bringing in players who Kobe once feuded with brings him up a notch or two and allows said players to do their jobs the right way. Steve Blake will be fine behind Derek Fisher, so point guard is set. Barring an injury to Kobe Bryant, this team will make it to the finals for the fourth year in a row (Which, by the way, is jaw-dropping).

2. Los Angeles Clippers - YES! The time HAS ARRIVED! Everyone's REAL FAVORITE Los Angeles team, the Clippers, is absolutely LOADED. Baron Davis has NEVER guarded a point guard with his back to the ball, so you KNOW he can shut down his defensive assignment. Eric GORDON! WOWZERS! People always say that if he played for a team other than the Clippers, he could score 25 POINTS PER GAME! WOW! Too bad the Clippers ARE LEGIT! Blake Griffin man. Jeez. You gotta love it. Chris Kaman will do his job too! And their small forward, Ryan Gomes, so serviceable, if his service is BUCKETS! Eric Bledsoe and Jon Scheyer as guard backups? LEGIT!

All sarcasm aside, this division really sucks and Blake Griffin is a solid talent. The Clippers should be able to take this spot.

3. Phoenix Suns - I know this team had players other than Amar'e Stoudemeire last season. But, they went where he was able to go. This team can't go anywhere without him.

4. Sacramento Kings - They're on their way. One more solid superstar on their team to go along with Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins will put this team in the playoffs.

5. Golden State Warriors - It really is too bad. If Brandan Wright had panned out, they wouldn't be in this spot.

All in all, aside from the obvious picks, the NBA is a crapshoot this season. So, let's just sit back, be surprised, and enjoy a great year of basketball.

Yes, it is going to be a great year.

Thursday Update: 10 - 7 - 10

Bengals host Buccaneers Preview
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off their bye week. In their last game, they were shellacked by the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, Quarterback Josh Freeman is coming into his own. He is spreading the ball around to various receivers and has a powerful arm. At this point in his development, his game is close to that of Browns Quarterback Seneca Wallace. However, as the Buccaneers are completely devoid of anything even remotely resembling a sustainable, powerful running game, the Bengals should not have a difficult time containing their offense. Expect Ray Maualuga to contain the Buccaneers running attack with the assistance of Keith Rivers. Due to the Bengals hole control at the defensive line, Dhani Jones may not need to make many tackles against the run.

As for the Bengals Offense against the Buccaneers Defense, I will once again recommend a fantasy play of Carson Palmer. Jordan Shipley's presence up the middle will be missed and the fine given to T.J. Ward should have been more severe, but the Bengals still have plenty of targets to allow Carson to have a good day against the Buccaneers defense, who are ranked twentieth in yards allowed per game despite facing weak offensive teams.

All in all, a solid day for the Bengals and a victory, 34-17.

Browns host Falcons Preview
The Browns scored a huge upset against the Falcons the week before, as did the Atlanta Falcons. The Browns secured their victory through an efficient running game and an opportunistic defense, like the Falcons.

Atlanta is a better team here, but the Browns are feeling great right now. They've played close games against all of their opponents and just scored a huge win against one of their division rivals. That said, Atlanta's one loss came against the strongest defense in the NFL. I'm feeling a huge day here for Michael Turner. Don't expect Matt Ryan to have to throw the ball with regularity.

Atlanta wins, 20-10.

Ravens host Broncos Preview
Here's the deal. The Ravens just played a rough, physical game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos played a nasty game against the Titans but did not participate in the festivities. The Ravens moved the ball well but are weak against a strong passing game. The Broncos have the bane of the Ravens.

Broncos win, 17-14.

Fantasy Football Start 'Em Sit 'Em
For PPR only.

Start:
Quarterbacks Carson Palmer, Sam Bradford, and Eli Manning
Running Backs Fred Jackson, Jahvid Best, and Matt Forte
Wide Receivers Chad Ochocinco, Dez Bryant and Legedu Naanee
Tight Ends Visanthe Shiancoe and Dustin Keller

Running Backs Tampa Bay (Stable), Denver (Stable) and Green Bay (Stable)
Wide Receivers Mike Sims-Walker, Mike Williams (TB) and Roy E. Williams

College Football Pick 'Em
#19 South Carolina over #1 Alabama (Because it has to happen sometime...)
#2 Ohio State over Indiana
#3 Oregon over Washington State
#4 Boise State over Toledo (Because it isn't going to happen until the BCS...)
#5 TCU over Wyoming
#7 Nebraska over Kansas State
#8 Auburn over Kentucky
#9 Arizona over Oregon State
#10 Utah over Iowa State
#11 Arkansas over Texas A&M
#12 LSU over #14 Florida
#23 Florida State over #13 Miami (FL)
USC over #16 Stanford
#17 Michigan State over #18 Michigan
#20 Wisconsin over Minnesota
#21 Nevada over San Jose State
#22 Oklahoma State over LA-Lafayette
#24 Mizzou over Colorado
#25 Air Force over Colorado State

Is it just me or are a lot of non-BCS school teams making it into the Top 25? I have a feeling that the pollsters may be in support of a reform of the current BCS system. Not just Boise State, TCU, and Utah, but now Nevada and Air Force? I mean, seriously, Air Force? Not saying they're a bad team, they're just the kind of team people don't hear about too often. I didn't think they would become popular until they inevitably hired Mike Leach, given the fact that he is an old-school coach and man.

Quick NBA Comments
I've never particularly been a huge NBA fan. But, as of late, I've seen some benefits in a more involved stance on the sport.

Let's face facts. This whole Kobe vs. LeBron thing is just Kobe's simple way of insulting LeBron for deciding to take "the easy way" to an NBA Championship, if there is such a thing (Right there, you can see the lack of balance in the sport). Kobe Bryant is older than LeBron. LeBron is a physical specimen; Kobe is on the tail end (He can still play the 4th quarter, but he can't score 50 anymore). Logic dictates that LeBron would absolutely dominate Kobe.

But, you know what? He wouldn't. Kobe is one a different level than LeBron. Not only that, he's gone from bad guy to good guy as a result of the New Big Three. While people hate to see the Lakers win and play their painful-to-watch, slightly more than non-physical, finesse game plan, what people hate more are people who make a lot of money and don't play for their loyal team anymore. No one in the country particular cares about Chris Bosh. I mean, come on, he played in Canada! And as for Dwayne Wade, people may feel sympathetic towards the fact that he is still going to lead the team and lose all of his spotlight, sort of like Paul Pierce. Nevertheless, LeBron betrayed Cleveland and people are going to go out and by #23 Dan Gilbert jerseys (Oh, sorry, #6 Dan Gilbert, for LeBron admitted he can't keep up with Michael by switching numbers and getting help).

It's not what people wanted to see. But, at the same time, it kinda is. Sports is the greatest story ever told by man. And, as far as drama goes, the NBA has always been at the top.

Quick MLB Comments
What an impressive showing by Roy Halladay. Too bad it was also an atrocious showing by the Reds, which greatly contributed to what happened on Wednesday night. Right now, the heroes for the Cincinnati Reds have to be Jay Bruce, for drawing a walk, and their bullpen. I'm not even sure you can call the bullpen a hero given the fact that the Phillies just weren't bringing it once they realized Roy Halladay was literally unhittable.

The Rangers are one of those rare teams that can actually hit in the post-season. Teams that hit in the post-season tend to go quite far, at least until they face quality playoff pitching. That being said, there are question marks about the Yankees rotation... Did I just skip ahead to the next round? Yeah. I think so.

Quick NHL Comments
The Red Wings are forcing Kirk Maltby to retire. /tear (/sarcasm). I believe "It's about time" is the appropriate response. For too long, the Red Wings have relied on over-the-hill veterans to carry their team to the promised land. When it comes to players who can still bring it on a nightly basis, age really doesn't matter that much. But, the Red Wings fell apart against the Penguins during the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals when they put their veterans in and took their hungry young blood out. With all due respect to the remaining members of the Grind Line and other Wings vets, it's time to fall into the background and allow players such as Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, and (eventually) Jakub Kindl to get involved. Look at what Jimmy Howard did for the Wings last year and tell me its a bad idea... Those men would make great staff members though.

I really love what the Carolina Hurricanes are doing right now. Their young blood is exceptional. For pete's sake, just look at the team's bloodline: Staal, Sutter, Ruutu, Jokinen. Young talent everywhere: Skinner, McBain, previously mentioned Staal and Sutter. They have veterans looking for a resurgence. Cam Ward is their goaltender. Stop talking about the Tampa Bay Hype-ning, because a Hurricane is come through.

Sunday Football Recap

Bengals - Browns Recap
Prediction: 31-17 Bengals
Actuality: 23-20 Browns

What Happened?
The Browns came to play. Peyton Hillis can carry the load for the Browns in back-to-back games against back-to-back somewhat sturdy run defenses. That is the story of the day: The Browns can run the ball and, as a result, they can take first downs and hold onto the ball, keeping an explosive Bengals offense off the field. Terrell Owens arrived for the first time this season and, honestly, for the first time since his time in Dallas, with a 10 catch, 222 yard, one touchdown day. Thoughts go out to Jordan Shipley, who took a violent shot to the head from former Oregon Safety T.J. Ward. Ward will almost certainly be fined for the hit.

Ravens - Steelers Recap
Prediction: 17-13 Ravens
Actuality: 17-14 Ravens

What Happened?
It was the game we expected. Flacco delivers a late touchdown pass to TJ Houshmandzadeh. On the game-winning drive, the Baltimore Ravens started on the 39 yard game. I will not blame Charlie Batch for the woes of the Steelers. He did everything in his power to get the Steelers the win. He has his limitations and the Steelers shall obviously be a better team with Ben Roethlisberger in the lineup. Rashard Mendenhall put up a valiant effort. Steelers Nose Tackle Casey Hamptom recorded the only sack of the day on Joe Flacco, was threw to four receivers with at least three receptions (Mason, Boldin, Houshmandzadeh, Heap). Overall, the fiercest rivalry in football continues.

Jeff Reed should be seen as somewhat accountable for the loss. He missed two field goals. Over the last few seasons, he has been making a habit out of missing key field goals. Before the 2009 season, a Steelers fan proposed to me that I should draft Jeff Reed to my fantasy team. I naturally asked for further clarification. He stated that a Steelers fan has never worried about whether or not Jeff Reed can hit a particular field goal. That is no longer the case.

I remember when Jeff Reed kicked six field goals against the Jacksonville Jaguars during Week 13 of the 2002 season. At Three Rivers Stadium, Kris Brown was a machine. But, he was unable to adapt to the unusual conditions of Heinz Field. As a result, the Steelers released the talented kicker and signed Todd Peterson for the 2002 season. He failed. The Steelers signed Jeff Reed. They haven't looked back since. Well, at least they haven't until today.

His time may be coming to a close.

Other Stories of Interest

Wow, San Francisco. Just... wow. Nate Clements, slide when you pick the ball off and let your team run down the clock. You're taught that in pee-wee. I understand that John Cooper may have yelled a few things in your helmet while you were at college about being the best athlete on the field and how you should always get excited when you have the ball in your hands and try to take it to the house. I know you are a former Punt Returner. I know that Mike Singletary has a power forward attitude. But, if you had slid after catching that ball, no one would have given you a funny look during game film screenings.

I know it's a bold statement, but the Lions MIGHT be a solid team next season, if Matthew Stafford can stay... I can't finish that sentence. Needless to say, they are a much better team than their Top 10, possible Top 5, draft pick in the 2011 NFL Draft will indicate.

The Titans continue to maintain their reputation as the NFL's epitome of class. Flipping the bird is for Sports Entertainment, IE Professional Wrestling and bad sports movies. It has no place in the NFL.

The NFC West is a mess. Max Hall may be able to put something together in the near future. I'm not counting on it. The 49ers have been, to quote ESPN, Herminated. The Seahawks? Inconsistent at best. The Rams are starting a talented rookie at quarterback, but a rookie nonetheless. Don't expect the NFC West Champion to perform well during the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs.

Who is going to win the NFC East? No one knows. The NFC North? It's a mess. The AFC East? It's still close, but we know the Bills are done. There is plenty of football left to be played. Let's make a toast to that.

College Football Saturday Recap

College Football Recap

First of all, thoughts go out to Coach Mark Dantonio over the victorious Michigan State Spartans.

#2 Ohio State's struggles against the Illinois Fighting Illini have been overstated. For pete's sake, they won the game and Zook's squad is almost always capable of putting up a fight against Jim Tressel. Heisman Candidate Terrelle Pryor is obviously the key to the Buckeye offensive squad. And, to be honest, he didn't look that bad. 24 points will win almost a variety of Big Ten contests and Ron Zook will almost always have talent on his squads, although he won't know what to do with his riches. The ability to limit Ohio State to 290 total yards and only 31 minutes time of possession is commendable. Ohio State lost the turnover battle in this game. That is a rarity. Don't expect Ohio State to struggle against the top teams in the Big Ten. Football isn't mathematics; transitive chains are logical, but certain teams can put up great games against great teams. And, these tend to, in the end, mean nothing, unless they become a regular occurrence. Sorry, Sagarin.

That being said, myteamisbetterthanyourteam.com is a fun website.

Everyone knew that #1 Alabama was an amazing squad. Deep down, everyone knew that #7 Florida was undeserving of their high ranking. That being said, don't blame Urban Meyer for the team's struggles. He is attempting to rebuild this squad. Florida penalty yardage = 50. Alabama penalty yardage = 47. When Urban Meyer is able to find space for his playmakers, IE Jeff Demps and sometimes Trey Burton, Florida can move the ball. Trey Burton looks like a stud athlete, one capable of making plays in the future. He's only a Freshman. I won't bet on the Gators this season. They are a bit behind the 2007 Florida Gators squad (The Tim Tebow released the Kraken season). Their defense could be better. Urban lost Major Wright, Brandon Spikes, Carlos Dunlap, and Joe Haden. It's a rebuilding year. In the SEC, it tends to happen. When the time comes, Nick Saban will have to deal with the same problems Urban Meyer is facing right now.

I was wrong to doubt #4 Oregon's offense. Stanford and Oregon are in similar leagues. They aren't in the same league, if that makes any sense. Playing in Autzen Stadium is always rough for opposing quarterbacks. It's almost as rough as standing next to a jet as it takes off. It should be noted that Stanford doesn't play like a pretender. They play like a contender. It's a long season. Don't count a Cardinal Pac-10 title out of the equation just yet.

Quick quip: Former Notre Dame Head Coach Bob Davie can't count to eleven, but Tennessee Head Coach Derek Dooley can't count to twelve.

My picks for this week (incorrect in bold, underlined)

Florida over Alabama
Ohio State over Illinois
Boise State over New Mexico State
Stanford over Oregon
TCU over Colorado State
Boomer Sooner over Hook 'Em Horns
Auburn over Louisiana-Monroe
Michigan State over Wisconsin

USC over Washington

NC State over Virginia Tech
Nevada over UNLV (Pending, but Nevada is up 28-14 at halftime)

Cincinnati Reds, AFC North Weekend, College Football Top 25 Picks, Fantasy Football Start and Sit, NHL Predictions

Celebrations in Cincinnati

In 1999, the Cincinnati Reds played the New York Mets in a one-game playoff. The Reds had the perfect mix of a star-in-the-making (or at least we thought) First Baseman, a veteran shortstop, a veteran power threat, and average pitching. All in all, I wasn't at all surprised when they lost to the New York Mets. The Mets were led by Mike Piazza, Edgardo Alfonzo, Robin Ventura, John Olerud, Rickey Henderson, Orel Hershiser, Al Leiter, and Armando Benitez. This is a Mets team that would lose to the Braves in the NLCS, but go to the World Series in 2000. They were built to win championships and the sport is, obviously, built to benefit the the Northeast and California markets.

On Tuesday night, I witnessed Jay Bruce's division-clinching home run. I saw a young team come together in celebration. Champagne bottles were popped. A city was truly free to go crazy for the first time since, well, 1990. On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Reds won the pennant.

The Reds failed in 1999. Why? They weren't built to win. This Reds team is built to win and they are built to win for a very, very long time. The most carefully constructed National League team since the Philadelphia Phillies, the Reds feature a Triple Crown-threat at first base, a hungry, loyal soldier at second base, a veteran shortstop, a generational talent at third base, and a slew of outfielders. When your team can limit a pure baseball player such as Laynce Nix to a comfortable 162 at-bats during a season, you know things are going well for your team.

Eight Reds Pitchers have started at least 8 games this season. Wake-up call, baseball world: They're all quite talented. That's a great prblem to have going into the post-season. And the bullpen was just serviceable, good yet unspectacular, until the Reds decided to call up a Cuban pitcher that can throw a 105 mile per hour fastball to strike out left-handed hitter, IE Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez, Jason Heyward and Brian McCann.

Simply put, the Reds are a great team. If they happen to draw the seemingly invincible Phillies and fall during the Division Series, don't panic. The Reds of 2011 will be better than the Reds of 2000. They will not collapse a la the Milwaukee Brewers, although steps will have to be taken to sustain the team in the long run. The Cubs have built themselves a big hole, the Brew Crew are rebuilding, Houston is rebuilding, and the Pirates are, well, the Pirates. The Cardinals will continue to be a significant threat, but the Reds will be as well.

More amazing than the fact that Dusty Baker can manage: Walt Jocketty isn't a moron.

Bengals - Browns Preview

On Sunday, the Cincinnati Bengals will visit the Cleveland Browns. The Cincinnati Bengals are coming off back to back wins against the Baltimore Ravens and the Carolina Panthers. As of yet, the Cincinnati Bengals have been unable to develop a consistent running game, nor have they been able to get Terrell Owens an offensive touchdown. That being said, Jordan Shipley has been highly productive for the Bengals out of the slot and Jermaine Gresham looks like a star in the making. Expect Carson Palmer to put up an elite passing day this Sunday against a porous Browns defense. As for the Bengals defense, it will be solid as always, led by the likes of Dhani Jones, Rey Maualuga, Leon Hall, and Jonathan Joseph.

As for the Browns, expect Seneca Wallace to continue to produce for the Browns at the quarterback position, hence continuing his quest to play football and prevent Colt McCoy's doomed-to-fail promotion. You have to love what Joshua Cribbs has been able to do for the Browns so far this season, scording two receiving touchdowns whilst also producing with the ball in his hands on six rushing attempts. While Peyton Hillis will almost certainly not repeat his effort against ht Ravens, one can expect him to continue to run the ball behind Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach, an elite Left Tackle and Guard combination. Unfortunately for the Browns, however, the defense just isn't there yet.

Bengals win, 31 - 17.

Steelers - Ravens Preview

The Cleveland Browns showed a weakspot in the Ravens defense: The power running game. Not only are the Baltimore Ravens, simply put, a bit banged up on defense, but they allowed Peyton Hillis to have a career game against their elite defensive squad. This is simply fire for Ray Lewis, who will attempt to lead his Baltimore Ravens to a brilliant rebound performance against Rashard Mendenhall and Issac Redman. And, if the Ravens are able to shut down the Steelers running game, despite the efforts of Charlie Batch, the Ravens will win. As for the Joe Flacco-led offense, the Jets - Ravens game taught us that Joe Flacco is willing and able to spread the ball around if Anquan Boldin is covered by an opposing defense. With Derrick Mason, TJ Houshmanzadeh, and Todd Heap going forward and Ray Rice going sideways, expect the Ravens to be able to pass the ball against this Steelers defense if Aaron Smith and the Steelers pass rush cannot get to the passer. However, Ray Rice will not be able to run the ball against the Steelers.

All in all, for the Steelers to win, Rashard Mendenhall will have to run the ball against Ray Lewis, and Ray Lewis still hasn't forgotten the text message Rashard sent to Ray Rice during the 2008 Steelers Super Bowl season prior to a Monday Night Football game between the two squads in which Mendenhall stated that he would run all over the Ravens defense. While Ray Lewis (hopefully) will not be able to break Rashard Mendenhall in two again, it just speaks to the depth of the rivalry between these two teams. For pete's sake, Ray Lewis even went into public and said that Ben wishes he was on the field, despite the beatdown the Ravens gave him during the 2006 season.

In fact, I bet the Ravens are hungry to strike at the Steelers, especially when one considers the five touchdown passes Ben Roethlisberger threw in one half during a Monday Night Football game between the Steelers and the Ravens during the 2007 season.

Look, it's THE fiercest rivalry in the AFC, probably in the entire NFL (All due respect to Packers - Bears). While I'm not going to say that the Ravens aren't favorites, I will say that fans should expect the expected and the unexpected to happen at the exact same time. A must-watch game for any true football fan.

Ravens win, 17-13

College Football Predictions: Week 5

Alabama over Florida
Ohio State over Illinois
Boise State over New Mexico State
Stanford over Oregon
TCU over Colorado State
Boomer Sooner over Hook 'Em Horns
Auburn over Lousiana-Monroe
Michigan State over Wisconsin

USC over Washington
Michigan over Indiana
North Carolina State over Virginia Tech

Ohio University over Eastern Michigan
Notre Dame over Boston College, because Notre Dame was better than his dream job.

Fantasy Football Start 'Em Sit 'Em: Week 4
My theory on Fantasy Football is and always shall be simple: Don't overthink it. Use common sense. Use tendencies. Big time players are big time players for a reason. An old player on a fantastic team is worth playing. And, you don't hear of the little people because they just aren't that important.

NHL Season Preview: Central and Atlantic Divisions

As if you couldn't already tell, this blog will cover certain divisions in a great detail. In football, the AFC North will be the prime subject. In baseball, it will be the NL Central. In hockey, I have chosen to cover the Atlantic and Central Divsions.

And, those of you who follow hockey know that these are, by far, the strongest divisions in hockey. Over the last three years, the Atlantic and Central Divisions have sent representatives to the Stanley Cup Final.

Atlantic Division
Pittsburgh Penguins: For me, the surprise of the off-season wasn't the signing of Paul Martin or Zybynek Michalek. In fact, these signings have been discussed, at length, in the sports world. As such, I will take this time to discuss a few pressing matters currently plauging the minds of Penguins fans: The line combinations and the 6th defenseman.

First of all, you know you have a championship contender when one of your pressing concerns is the 6th defenseman. Ben Lovejoy is signed to a two-way contract for the 2010-2011 season. Great. Bon. Bien. Yay. Cool. That means Simon Despres gets a 9-game tryout a la Kristopher Letang in 2006-2007 to see if he is worth keeping on the big league team this year. Keep this in mind folks: During that 9 game stretch, Kristopher Letang was great with the puck on his stick. He was continually able to find a way to get the puck in the net. If I recall correctly, during one game against the New York Rangers, Jordan Staal (who was also on a 9 game tryout; he stayed) and Kristopher Letang combined for two to three goals.

This is a veteran team. I don't see Despres sticking unless he is already better than Jack Johnson.

As for the line combinations:
Kunitz - Crosby - Dupuis
Staal - Malkin - Comrie
Cooke - Talbot - Asham
TK - Adams - Rupp

That is, of course, totally dependent on what will come of the Eric Tangradi - Tyler Kennedy situation. I cannot see the Penguins keeping both of those players on the big squad, although how much playing time Tyler Kennedy actually needs is a valid question, one that brings to mind the idea of ceiling, potential, and what has already been reached. Mike Rupp is a fighter that can actually play. He stays. Craig Adams is to Dan Bylsma as Michell Ouellet is to Michel Therrien, only Craig Adams is actually an A+ student. He's sticking.
Anyone who has seen Kunitz, Crosby, and Dupuis skate together know the line can produce and attack the neutral and offensive zones whilst also maintaining solid defensive coverage. The Cooke - Talbot - Asham line is incredible to see in person. If Mike Comrie can't score 25 goals with Jordan Staal and Evgeni Malkin, then Jordan Staal is going to marry Taylor Swift and Malkin will marry Milla Jovovich so as to make Mike Comrie feel inadequate.

I went there.

New York Islanders: You know, I really like the Islanders this year. They're underrated. They got a good young core of players, including several superstars in the making. If Rick DiPietro can stay heal...

I can't even finish that word. Then again, this is the year I drafted Ronnie Brown in two fantasy football leagues, so perhaps I should be more optimistic. Even if DiPietro stays healthy, the defense in front of him will almost certainly not be strong enough to maintain a lead in the 2nd period, let alone the 3rd period. That being said, don't be surprised if the Isles sneak in as a #8 seed. Tavares won't put up the numbers of Steven Stamkos, but he'll do everything he can to push this team into the hunt.

New York Rangers: Would someone please fire Glen Sather already?

First of all, this team would look much better with the late Alexei Cherepanov sharing a line with Artem Anisimov and Alexander Frolov. However, one cannot play such what-ifs and expect to remain sane. As a Penguins fan, I often wonder what the early 90s squads would have looked like if they had drafted the likes of Patrick Roy and Teemu Selanne. It just isn't healthy.

Artem Anisimov, Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Drury, Vaclav Prospal, Alex Frolov, Marian Gaborik, Ryan Callahan, Ruslan Fedotenko, Tim Kennedy, some goons, and Sean Avery. Not a bad forward squad.

Marc Staal, Michael Rozsival, Daniel Girardi, Michael Del Zotto, Wade Redden, and whomever they choose to put at #6. Not a bad defensive squad either.

Martin Biron will back up King Henrik, Bill Clement's lover on the EA Sports NHL series. Not bad.

Look, they're a solid team. But, how often will Frolov go to sleep this season? On that note, how many times will Fedotenko, Vaclav Prospal, and Tim Kennedy take a nap? How many minor penalties will the goons take, let alone Sean Avery? How many times will Marian Gaborik and Chris Drury fall to injury? With Wade Redden's assumed inability to play up to his contract, albeit overstated, how solid will their defense truly be?

It isn't that the Rangers are going to be a bad team. They just aren't going to be a good team. They're solid. Their playoff spot belongs to the likes of the underrated Carolina Hurricanes and the overhyped Tampa Bay Lightning.

Philadelphia Flyers: Beastly. Simply beastly.

Expect Mike Richards to put up 70 to 80 points every year. Expect Jeff Carter to put up 30 to 40 goals every year. Danny Briere, when healthy, is a great Top 6 forward. Ville Leino is a solid forward, but he won't be what he was during the playoff run.

Onto the other forward. Expect a breakout year from James Van Riemsdyk. He's a great young forward with an absurd amount of potential. Claude Giroux will continue his march forward. Nikolai Zherdev can be counted on for his ability to draw defensive attention and register 25 goals and 30 assists. That isn't bad. Oh, and Scott Hartnell is still pretty good.

The grinders are going to remain a force for this team. Ian Laperriere is a tough player to have in the bottom six. The same can be said for Darroll Powe and Daniel Carcillo. All in all, the powerful forecheck of the Flyers will help carry this team into the playoffs and, barring matchups in the First Round, far into it if I may be so bold.

Andrej Meszaros, Matt Carle, Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, and whomever you want at #6. Another great defensive squad.

But, when it all comes down to it, the Flyers still have a major hole at goalie. Their situation is worse than the Blackhawks. It's worse than the Blue Jackets. It's worse than any other team in the division. That's why this team will not win a Stanley Cup. They give up soft goals to Patrick Kane in overtime.

New Jersey Devils: I really want this team to collapse. But, they won't. They're going to be as boring as usual. Kovalchuk won't score as many goals as people expect of him, but he will generate some offensive chances. Expect this team to make the playoffs and almost certainly fail. I will never pick the Devils to make it out of the first round.

Central Division
Detroit Red Wings: Early Stanley Cup favorite, to be so bold. They return the majority of their squad from a year ago, which came on late following an injury-riddled season. Mike Modano will stabilize a third line. Jiri Hudler is going to show off what he learned over in Russia: Zilch. Don't worry, he'll be as productive, if not more productive, than Nikolai Zherdev. The defense will be as solid as usual. Jimmy Howard will produce at the goaltender position. There isn't much to say about the certain-to-be Central Division champions. They are going to be a fun watch, if you love everything that's great about hockey.

St. Louis Blues: This young, talented team finally received the goaltender it deserved in Jaroslav Halak. It isn't the goalie the Canadiens needed, althoug he is better than Carey Price. A slew of young forwards will lead this team into the playoffs. Expect Erik Johnson's stalwart defensive presence to put him in the discussion for the Norris Trophy.

Columbus Blue Jackets: No. Just no. Sorry. They just aren't a good team. They may not even be a solid team. The foundation that was built just two years ago has already caved in on itself.

Nashville Predators: Good defensive. Good goaltending. Great coaching. They're the Buffalo Sabres of the Western Conference. They will make a push for the playoffs. Their scoring depth is slim. They don't have what it takes for a deep run.

Chicago Blackhawks: It realy is a shame that I'm not going to get to hear the Blackhawks goal horn this season. It's one of the best in hockey. They lost a lot of depth and a lot of fan favorites. However, defensively, they are built to succeed. Replacing Cristobal Huet with Marty Turco was a smart move. Expecting Marty Turco to fill in Antti Niemi's shoes is bold. No. Their defense shall continue to be strong. But, they will not be able to play the same exciting style that brought the city of Chicago a Stanley Cup. For now, the Central Division appears to belong to the Red Wings. Expect the Blackhawks to make the playoffs as a #6 or #7 seed.
